Anthropogenic seismicity: focus on the High Agri Valley case study in southern Italy

Although it is documented since the 1920s that earthquakes can have anthropogenic causes, the scientific community has shown a growing interest in this research topic as justified by more than 50 scientific papers published each year. One of the reasons is the strong social and political implication for seismic hazard and risk, with a real concern about larger earthquakes that might be triggered by industrial activities as the case of the 2011 Mw 5.7 earthquake at Prague (Oklahoma) caused by wastewater disposal operations. In this seminar, a brief overview of the physical processes that underlie the occurrence of anthropogenic seismicity is provided and the case study of the High Agri Valley (southern Italy) is discussed. Finally, the experimental INSIEME seismic network deployed in the study area is presented.
